Specialist Knowledge

Founded SPM Mechanical Engineering Ltd in 2016, providing freelance mechanical design services to UK, US and European manufacturers, delivering modular machine redesigns, specialist printing machinery, Industry 4.0 automation projects and ongoing support to SMEs and blue-chip clients.

Experienced Mechanical Engineering Consultancy

Stephen began his engineering career at just sixteen, joining Rofin-Sinar as an apprentice and gaining a solid foundation in hands-on manufacture, precision machining and technical problem-solving. Alongside his apprenticeship, he completed a broad range of BTEC, City & Guilds and NVQ qualifications that built the academic and practical grounding for his future design career.

He progressed into the drawing office in 2005, taking on his first mechanical design responsibilities and delivering early landmark projects, including the full design of an IP67-rated air and water-cooled laser marking system for harsh industrial environments. During this time he furthered his education, completing a First-Class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hull in 2010 and winning the Alec Appleby Award for engineering excellence.

Stephen went on to expand his expertise at AB Graphic International and later Contitech, Industrial Fluid Systems. A subsidiary of Continental AG, where he worked across laser die-cutting technology, large-scale test platforms, CAPEX engineering and full machine lifecycle development. These roles strengthened his ability to take projects from concept through to installation, working closely with suppliers, contractors and multi-disciplinary teams.

In 2016, he founded SPM Mechanical Engineering Ltd, allowing him to bring his experience to a wide range of clients across the UK, Europe and the US. Since then, he has delivered modular machine redesigns, specialist printing and filtration machinery, and Industry 4.0 automation projects for SMEs and blue-chip organisations alike. Today, Stephen continues to work at the intersection of precision design, innovation and practical engineering, supporting manufacturers with solutions that improve performance, efficiency and long-term value.

FAQs

Yes. Many of our projects are confidential, and we are experienced in working under non-disclosure agreements for clients managing sensitive, high-value designs.

Absolutely. While we don’t handle manufacturing directly, we provide complete post-project packs containing all the information, drawings, and files a manufacturer requires – reducing risk and ensuring smooth production.

Yes. We work on everything from small component detailing through to large-scale multi-module production machinery.

We have significant experience in print and packaging machinery, but also work with oil & gas, steelworks, plastics, conveyor systems, and more.

Testimonials

“I have been using Stephen and SPM Mechanical Engineering for many years now. Whenever I have a mechanical design requirement, Stephen is the first person I turn to. He is very intuitive and can execute the most demanding of designs with limited information. Some of the design work I ask Stephen to complete would be considered too demanding for many. He always delivers on time and within budget. Long may it continue.”

Matthew Clay, ContiTech, Senior Project Engineer

“We have manufactured and assembled lots of designs that SPM Mechanical Engineering have produced over the years. All designs are provided as manufacturing packs that include all of the files and information needed to successfully complete the project. Very rarely do we need to go back asking for additional information. Stephen’s attention to detail is second to none.”

Daniel Funnell, Director, Quality Machining Services (Grimsby) Limited.

“Steve at SPM Mechanical Engineering has helped us develop and extend our range of Digital Label Finishing and Converting Machinery alongside the team here at Spartantics. His experience of CO2 laser design and integration alongside his ability to design very complex automated machinery made him the perfect partner. He is incredibly intuitive and seems to understand our design requirements after a few brief conversations.”

Robert Crockett, Spartantics, Engineering Manager
