Sheet Metal

Flat Patterns and Folded Profiles

Project Brief

This section showcases SPM Mechanical Engineering’s experience in the design and detailing of sheet metal components and assemblies. From simple flat profiles to complex multi-bend fabrications, each project is developed with a strong focus on manufacturability, efficiency, and precision, ensuring designs move smoothly from CAD into production.

Our Process

Connect

We support a wide range of sheet metal projects, from individual components to complex fabricated assemblies, tailored to meet specific functional and manufacturing requirements.

Create

Designs are developed in SolidWorks with careful consideration of flattening feasibility, manufacturing constraints, and material efficiency to minimise waste and optimise production.

Complete

Comprehensive manufacturing packs are provided, including technical drawings, assemblies, flat pattern DXFs, nesting layouts, BOMs, material specifications, and 3D STEP files.

Repeat

Our sheet metal expertise has supported many projects, including vacuum bin assemblies and machine safety covers, with clients returning for ongoing design and development work.

Connect:

SPM Mechanical Engineering have been involved in many projects that require the design and detailing of sheet metal components. Whether it is a simple flat profile, complex multi bend component or fabricated sheet metal assembly requiring multiple complicated sheet metal components, SPM Mechanical Engineering have the knowledge, skillset and vision to bring your sheet metal projects to life.

Create:

Our sheet metal projects vary greatly in complexity but they generally all start life in SolidWorks as a single flat sheet of material, onto which edge flanges are added and the component detail captured. One key consideration when designing sheet metal components is can the finished part actually be manufactured? Strange question…but by that we mean can the finished part be flattened into a single sheet without any material conflicts thus allowing the flat pattern to be manufactured before processing. Another key consideration is to make the flat pattern as economical as possible thus reducing material wastage. Sheet material comes from the mill in defined sizes, making the most of this material and reducing waste and thus cost is a primary driver of our sheet metal design.

Complete:

Our sheet metal projects are always supplied with a comprehensive manufacturing pack allowing designs to move seamlessly into production. The manufacturing pack contains:

  • Technical Drawings.
  • Assembly Drawings.
  • Flat pattern DXFs.
  • Fabrication details where necessary.
  • Sheet nesting layouts for larger projects.
  • Full BOMs.
  • Full material specifications and finishes.
  • 3D step files

If further information is needed for manufacture than just ask. We can supply files in most filetypes.
