Visualisation, Animations and Explosions

Project Brief

This section highlights a range of visualisation and animation projects delivered by SPM Mechanical Engineering. Visualisation and Animations are a great way to market and communicate your new product designs long before any capital has been invested in manufacture. Showcased within this section are photo realistic renders, mechanism operation animations, product explode and collapses and factory layout walkthroughs.

SPM Mechanical Engineering designed a 2-spindle semi-automated turret rewinder for continuous label production, featuring automated cutting, ejecting and glueing. After completing the SolidWorks design, photorealistic renders and animations were requested for stakeholder communication.

Create

Animations were developed by defining component movements, timing and camera views, with added visual effects for clarity. Photorealistic renders were produced in SolidWorks Visualize using realistic materials and lighting.

Complete

Deliverables included an HD render, operational animations of the full module and blade carriage, and assembly explode animations, alongside full technical assembly drawings.

SPM Mechanical Engineering applies its visualisation expertise across a range of projects, delivering animations and renders for product design, factory layouts, and assembly processes to support communication, sales, and engineering workflows.

Connect:

As part of a larger project, SPM Mechanical Engineering were tasked with designing a 2 spindle, semi-automated turret rewinder. Turret rewinders are used typically at the end of a label converting line to allow for continuous production. The 2 spindle turret rewinder shown here had automated cutting, ejecting and glueing. The completed rolls were removed from the machine by an operator after ejecting, with a new cardboard core loaded after the ejecting operation. All of these operations take place around a central rotating disc (turret). After completing the mechanical design of the module within SolidWorks, the client asked for photo realistic renders and product animations to be produced for communication with all stakeholders within the project.

Create:

Upon completion of the mechanical design, work began on producing the overall operational animation of the turret rewinder module. Rotational and linear movements of components are assigned along with the time frame in which these movements take place. Once all movements are captured and the sequences for the animation are created, cameras are placed around the model to capture the animation as intended. Other features such as component transparency and colour changes can be added to the animation timeframe to add extra detail where needed.

The photo realistic renders were created using SolidWorks Visualise software. The final design is imported into Visualize were real world finishes, appearances and lighting are assigned to the model before the render process outputs marketing quality imagery.

Complete:

For this specific project, the following photo realistic renders and animations were delivered:

  • Photo Realistic Render of overall module, exported as a HD image (1280 * 720).
  • Operational animation of overall module, exported as MP4 filetype.
  • Operational animation of individual blade carriage, exported as MP4 filetype.
  • Assembly animation of the explode and collapse of overall module and individual blade carriage, for use during the assembly process, exported as MP4 filetype.

In addition to the renders and animations produced, SPM Mechanical Engineering also produced all of the technical assembly drawings showing the exploded views of the module and its sub-assemblies.
